YouTube comments not showing: 8 causes and fixes

Why do YouTube comments disappear or fail to load?

Few things are more frustrating than posting a thoughtful comment on a YouTube video only to watch it vanish, or opening a video as a creator to find an empty comment feed.

YouTube employs aggressive automated spam algorithms, content classification systems, and browser-level caching rules. When a comment fails to show up, it is almost always caused by one of eight specific triggers.

Here is the diagnostic guide to fixing missing YouTube comments.

Fix 1: YouTube automated spam filter (Held for review)

YouTube uses artificial intelligence to automatically scan incoming comments for links, repetitive phrasing, and suspicious behavior.

Fix 2: channel blocked words list filtering

Creators can add specific keywords to their channel moderation settings. Any comment containing a blocked word is automatically held in the review queue.

Fix 3: Restricted Mode enabled on browser or network

Restricted Mode is an optional setting in YouTube designed to screen out potentially mature content. When active, it automatically hides all comment sections on every video.

(Note: If you are on a school or work network, Restricted Mode may be enforced by your network administrator).

Fix 4: browser extensions & adblocker conflicts

Many adblockers and script blockers accidentally block the JavaScript element that renders YouTube's comment stream.

Fix 5: "Made for Kids" audience setting

Under COPPA regulations, YouTube is legally required to disable comments entirely on all videos designated as "Made for Kids".

Fix 6: shadowbanned user ("Hidden from channel")

If a channel owner clicked "Hide user from channel" on your account in the past, your comments will appear normally to you, but will be invisible to all other viewers and the creator.

Fix 7: mobile app cache corrupted

On iOS and Android, corrupted local cache can prevent comments from loading beneath the video player.

Fix 8: video privacy changed (Private or unlisted)

Comments behave differently depending on video visibility:

How to keep comment sections active and healthy with ReplyTide

Two habits prevent most of the self-inflicted cases.

Clear the held-for-review queue weekly. It empties itself after 60 days, so a queue nobody opens is quietly deleting real comments. And audit your own blocked words list occasionally: an over-broad list is the most common cause of a mysteriously quiet comment section, and it is invisible from the outside because held comments look deleted to the person who wrote them. The blocked words guide covers which terms are safe and which over-catch.

The one thing filters cannot help with is a promise you made. If you told viewers to comment a word for a resource, every one of those needs an answer, and pasting the same link into fifty replies quickly produces the exact pattern the spam systems catch. ReplyTide watches for the word and sends the reply you wrote, within a minute or two, through the official YouTube Data API.

Fix 9: sort order

The mundane one, and it catches people out constantly. The comment sort defaults to Top comments, which is a ranking rather than everything in order. Switch to Newest first before concluding something is wrong. A recent comment on a busy video is often just far down a list.

Common questions

Why does the count say 10 when I can only see 2?

The count includes comments held for review and comments hidden from public view, neither of which a viewer can see. It also lags behind deletions for a while. A gap between the number and what is visible is normal.

Only if the creator turned on the setting that holds comments containing links, which many have. It is off unless enabled. It applies to viewers rather than the channel owner: comments with links from you, your moderators and your approved users are not held.

How long does a comment stay in the "Held for review" tab?

Comments held for review remain in YouTube Studio for 60 days before being permanently deleted if not manually approved by the creator.
