Why do YouTube comments disappear or fail to load?
Few things are more frustrating than posting a thoughtful comment on a YouTube video only to watch it vanish, or opening a video as a creator to find an empty comment feed.
YouTube employs aggressive automated spam algorithms, content classification systems, and browser-level caching rules. When a comment fails to show up, it is almost always caused by one of eight specific triggers.

Fix 1: YouTube automated spam filter (Held for review)
YouTube uses artificial intelligence to automatically scan incoming comments for links, repetitive phrasing, and suspicious behavior.
- For Creators: Go to YouTube Studio > Comments > Held for review. If legitimate viewer comments were flagged by mistake, click the checkmark icon to approve them.
- For viewers: links, all-caps and pasting the same text across several videos all raise the odds. Nothing tells you it happened, which is why the incognito test below is worth knowing.
Fix 2: channel blocked words list filtering
Creators can add specific keywords to their channel moderation settings. Any comment containing a blocked word is automatically held in the review queue.
- For viewers: if your comment contained words like "price", "discount" or "free", the channel owner may have filtered them. Try rewording without promotional language.
- For creators: YouTube's documentation says comments "containing or closely matching" a blocked term may be held for up to 60 days. That closely matching is why blocklists over-catch, and why your own list is the first suspect when legitimate comments keep disappearing.
Fix 3: Restricted Mode enabled on browser or network
Restricted Mode is an optional setting in YouTube designed to screen out potentially mature content. When active, it automatically hides all comment sections on every video.
- How to Turn Off Restricted Mode:
- Click your profile picture in the top-right corner of YouTube.
- Scroll to the bottom and click Restricted Mode: On.
- Toggle the slider to Off.

- How to Test: Copy the link to your comment, open an incognito window without logging in, and paste the URL. If the comment is missing in incognito, your account has been hidden by that creator.
Fix 7: mobile app cache corrupted
On iOS and Android, corrupted local cache can prevent comments from loading beneath the video player.

- iOS Fix: Force close the YouTube app, toggle Airplane mode on and off, or uninstall and reinstall the app.
Fix 8: video privacy changed (Private or unlisted)

Common questions
Why does the count say 10 when I can only see 2?
The count includes comments held for review and comments hidden from public view, neither of which a viewer can see. It also lags behind deletions for a while. A gap between the number and what is visible is normal.
Do links in comments get hidden automatically?
Only if the creator turned on the setting that holds comments containing links, which many have. It is off unless enabled. It applies to viewers rather than the channel owner: comments with links from you, your moderators and your approved users are not held.
